Identity in adolescence life is what defines who teens are and what they will become .Learning what identity is to an adolescent and what the factors are that influence their identity will help us create a bigger picture for researchers, and adults to understand the working of a youths young mind thus enabling us to build up generations of confident competent young adults.
When a adolescent hits a certain age he or she begins to step into a role that includes taking on more responsibility. They start to learn to become more independent as they begin to rely less on their parents and others and start making their own choices about their future, job, career, and schooling. They gradually take hold of their own life and destiny. They begin to decide what their moral beliefs are. During this transition through adolescence they establish a sense of Identity through these new changes.
During this phase of new found independence an adolescent hopefully learns to accept who they are as a Male/Female, within our society’s set roles for those genders. During that transition period, they must learn to adjust to the changes that are happening to them as they hit puberty. Some adolescents start to have a boost in their self esteem when they hit puberty as they become fond of their new found identity. Sometimes they become timid and self conscience because of the distorted body images that the media and society depict as normal such as; saying a certain body type is perfect and if you don’t have that certain body type you must be abnormal. Media sources such as magazines, television, and the music industry set a standard that most pre-teens /teen tend to follow as an example for fashion, music styles stereo types and preferred body type. This powerfully impacts the development of an adolescent’s identity.
