The Importance of Social Responsibility

Social responsibility can be described as the positive influence a business has on the surrounding community. When a company is socially responsible, it means that instead of the main concern being solely on current or future profits; it should focus on creating a positive impact in the society in which it operates. A company’s attitude towards social responsibility can also have a great impact on whether they will thrive as a business or be unsuccessful in the end. Company Q, a grocery store, shows indications that they are focused solely on financials, not what is in the best interest of their employees, customers or community. Being socially responsible means that you have an obligation to act in ways that benefit the people and it is of utmost importance for a company to do so. When actions are taken to help the community it creates a ripple effect of commitment, loyalty, trust, customer satisfaction, and of course profit. Company Q, demonstrates social irresponsibility after closing two stores due to loss of revenue in high crime areas, adding requested health food items, but at a limited amount and high profit margin, and refusing to give donations of unused, day old food. Steps can be taken by the grocery store in order to improve this company’s attitude towards their social responsibility.

In the case of food donations, currently Company Q is throwing away food that is only one day old. Their reasoning is that they are afraid of loss of revenue due to possible fraud and theft by the employees that would be delivering the food. To prevent theft from employees and to also avoid a complete waste of day old food, the company should request that the food be picked up by the food bank at the store. This is a simple way the items can be donated directly and management will be at ease since they would not have to worry about lost revenue from deception or theft from personnel.
