The problems faced by others teach us many different lessons like when Percy was getting attacked by chimera a son of the goddess of monsters, when suddenly innocent bystanders tried to flee through an emergency exit but suddenly it was jammed. That shows you that just because it was designed to help you it might not come in handy, the lesson you learn is that you might want to check your safety equipment because someday you might need to use it. I believe the theme is people will sacrifice everything for family or friends, I believe that’s the theme because Percy is sacrificing his life a lot just to save his mother I mean he went to the underworld witch no one except hades and other gods has come out alive and they literally can’t die. When he came up short on pearls it killed him inside the only reason he didn’t use it on his mom was because she wouldn’t have let him because he had to return the lightning bolt. What will happen to his mother you ask? When Percy got to Olympus after all the conversation Poseidon told Percy his mom was at home because hades returned her because he returned his helm and he got the choice to either save her from Gabe or let her save herself he chose to let her save herself.
A few symbols I encountered were the lightning bolt and the trident. The lightning bolt is obvious because it’s in the title and the whole book is based off of it because the thought is that Percy the son of Poseidon is stealing it for him to over throw the power of Zeus and to prove the gods wrong he goes on this quest to find the master lightning bolt and return it to Zeus before the summer solstice of all war will break loos so this is why I think this is the primary symbol of this book. I think the secondary symbol is Poseidon’s trident because it set up the whole quest for Percy by claiming him the son of Poseidon (the lightning thief).
