The case of Gorkhaland Movement in the Northern Hills of West Bengal .

Much of the scholarly enquiry in recent days in the social studies in India have been directed towards the understanding of the genesis and growth of cultural-territorial identity and aspirations; and political mobilization of such aspirations in the form of political agitation and militant activities. This issue has become more complex as it also involves the question of disintegration of India. Such movements are generally described as ‘ethnic phenomenon’, though semantic disagreements persist.

The issue of ethnic mobilization founded upon cultural – territorial and often developmental demands is more complex in case of India ; for India presents an extreme multiplicity of races, cultural and linguistic groups with a past history of their own which some times clash with the past history of another...
