The modern society today faces a lot of problems due to alarming rise in crime rate.Be it thefts, robbery, frauds, rape, homicide;all of them have become more common.This has been attributed to many different factors.It could be anything from the changing demands,lifestyle and moral values of people. Yes, moral behaviour cannot be legislated but it can keep a person in check, and keep them away from undesirable activities. Many people believe that laws sometimes take away the freedom from people as in Iran the law compels the females to cover themselves completely, intermixing of sexes is prohibited while no such law exists in the western countries.In India, sex determination of fetus is not allowed whereas in other countries it is legal. It maybe thought of as outrageous when we hear about it. On the contrary, these laws do have their benefits.Rapes, premarital teenage pregnancies in Iran are very low. Sex determination in India is illegal to decrease the incidences of female infanticide in the country. Crimes in countries where penalties are strict are rare for example in Saudi Arabia, a person proved to be stealing has one of his hands chopped off, or a rapist if found guilty is sentenced to death;the incidences of these crimes are pretty low. In many countries of Africa,there are no laws, no rules and regulations. The plight of civilians living in these places is unimaginable. Thousands of them are being killed,robbed and raped everyday.Their children are left hungry on the streets, with no one to take care of them.Crime is rampant and these offenders get off scot free and continue their activities because there are no legislations, no police to catch and punish them. The laws have been framed to protect the rights of the individual and of the society.Leniency in punishing the guilty encourages others to follow suit.If there would be no laws, there would be anarchy and chaos in the society.Then there would be no value of other’s life and property.It has...
