The Modern Version of Greek Tragedy

_‘Angel to Rat’_ Eddie Carbone has been described as a modern-day, tragic hero. Trace the decline in his character form “an angel” whom God will bless to a man who “belongs in the garbage”. A View from the bridge has been called a modern version of a Greek tragedy. And like a Greek tragedy the hero is lead towards a fate by destiny that cannot be avoided. The play also parodies Aristotle in which a character, Alfieri, acts as narrator in a complex turn of events. And also the hero in the play, Eddie, has a fatal flaw that eventually leads to his demise. Eddies fatal flaw is his incestuous feelings towards Catherine and his inability to except that he has them. Beatrice however notices this and tries to stop it by saying things like “she’s no baby no more.” And “she’s seventeen years old, you gonna keep her in the house all her life?” Despite this Eddie is, at the start of the play, a well loved and hard working member of the community. And after allowing Beatrice’s cousins into the country to stay with them he is referred to as “an angel!” He also has a lot of respect from Catherine and Beatrice, and also his workmates Louis and Mike. When the cousins arrive we notice a change in Eddie. It is ever so slight but it changes all the same. When they arrive he says to Catherine “What’s the high heels for, Garbo?” he says this to show his dominance to Marco and Rodolfo. Near the start of the play Eddie likes Marco and Rodolfo. He believes them to be honest and hardworking people who came only looking for jobs. However he seems to quickly take a dislike towards Rodolfo and starts to pay more attention towards Marco. “(he is coming more and more to address Marco only)”. Also when Catherine starts to feel an attraction towards Rodolfo Eddie starts to dislike him even more. An example of Catherine falling for them can be found in the stage direction “(wondrously)” However Eddie still likes Marco referring to him as a “bull” and saying that he is a good worker....
