In the beginning of the movie Gerry has a very bad relationship to his father, Guiseppe. He had never called him dad, and I think, that it strongly describes their relationship, or Gerry’s relationship to Guiseppe. A day, where Gerry stole some lead, something unexpected happened. The English soldiers think that he is a sniper and they begin hunting him. The IRA finds him and gives him a warning to not do it again. Guiseppe comes and fetch him.
Just right after Guiseppe has picked up Gerry from the IRA, they talk about their life. Guiseppe says that Gerry should get a job, and Gerry says, that he thinks, that it is better not to have a job, than working for a bookmaker.
They are obviously having two different views of how to live the life, and it is hard for both of them to accept each other’s opinions. Guiseppe decides that Gerry must go to England.
Gerry and Guiseppe walk together down to the ferry. While they walk, they talk again. Guiseppe tell about himself and how he met Gerry’s mother. Gerry slowly begins to understand his father.
After Gerry went to the ferry he turned back, to call Guiseppe for father, for the first time in his life. But Guiseppe had already left, and therefore he did not hear him.
Throughout the whole movie, the relationship between them are getting better and better, but not without challenges.
Later on in the movie Guiseppe was imprisoned for conspiracy for murder. At that time Gerry was already imprisoned for terrorism.
When they meet each other in the prison, all the things, which have been kept from the surface, comes out, and they nearly began to fight.
I think, that it is a very important moment in their relationship, because they tell each other how they feel to each other. Especially Gerry has a lot to tell his dad. He felt that his dad has failed him all his life. He thinks that his dad has failed the family, because he got sick because of a job he had. I think that after the quarrel, is their...
