Global Warming

Is global warming harming our planet? What do you think? Global warming can affect us all. It is no trivial issue. It needs to be addressed and I’m going to tell you why. The fact is that global warming is a threat. This is because there are holes in the ozone layer, the polar ice caps are melting and many species and habitats are being destroyed.
To begin I would like to talk to you about the ozone layer. There are holes in the ozone layer. A perfect example is the large hole that has formed above Antarctica. This is a major threat to global warming. The ozone layer as a whole has begun to thin as well. This means in some places forming holes. There is a carbon known as chlorofluorocarbons or CFC’s that damage the ozone layer. CFC’s are found in items such as your hairspray cans or the coolant in your refrigerator. This is the leading cause of ozone depletion.
Now let’s discuss our ice caps. The polar ice caps are melting. Soaring temperatures have led to the collapse of several huge ice shelves in the Canadian Arctic. This is causing major ice cap loss. The north coast of Ellesmere Island is permanently frozen all year round. But this year and probably the first time in thousands of years there were huge areas of open water. This shows how much change is happening to our ice caps. Also in 2005 a very large section of ice broke off of the Ayles ice sheet in the Arctic Circle. This is just more proof that ice caps are melting.
Next I will inform you on another hot topic. This is that many species and habitats are being threatened by global warming. Rapid global warming can affect an ecosystems chance to adapt naturally. This shrinks that ecosystems chance of possibly existing any longer. Another threat is to coral reefs, in the last decade coral reefs have suffered a type of pollution known as bleaching. Bleaching happens when too much sunlight gets in to the coral reefs and damages it. This affects the animals and the ecosystem of the...
