The old man in a basket
Long time ago, there was a farmer in a little village. He lived with his wife, a young son, and his own old father. Every day, the farmer’s wife wove cloth to make some extra money for the family.
As time passed, the farmer’s father became very old and weak. He could not help them in any work at all. The farmer and his wife felt that he was a burden to them. They no longer took good care of him.
The old man was given only a little food to eat and old torn clothes to wear. Sometimes, without his parent’s knowledge, the farmer’s son would give the old man some extra food. He loved his his grandfather very much.
One day, the boy’s parents found out about the extra food and they scolded their son. The old man often mumbled unhappily to himself, and the farmer and his wife grew more and more impatient with him.
The farmer finally decided to put his father in a large basket,and send him to a faraway place, and leave him there.
They did not know that their son had overhead their conversation.
The next day, when the farmer went out to buy the basket, the boy asked his mother, “why do you want to chase grandfather away?”
“Oh no,” answered his mother, trying to hide the truth. “We only want to take him to a better place because we don’t have the time to look after him.
“Where will you take grandfather?” asked the son.
“Don’t ask so many questions! You’ re still young. Besides, this new place is safe.”
That evening, the farmer returned with a larger basket. A soon as it was dusk, he put his father into the basket.
“What are you doing to me?” asked the old man. “Where are you taking me?”
“Father, we can’t look after you. We want to take you to a better place. There you will be well looked after.” With those words, the farmer lifted the basket onto his shoulders.
The farmer’s son saw what was happening. After the farmer had walked a short distance from the house, his son shouted to him,” Father, don’t forget to bring back...
