My junior year of high school had come fast. I was still in Marching Band and still playing the trombone. I had been playing since fourth grade. Looking back, I realized that I stayed in band for the sole purpose of going on the famed “band trip”. This trip would ultimately sculpt me into the person I am today. It had taken a lifetime to get to this point.
It all started in a band parent meeting. I attended this meeting with my mom. The topic of discussion was a decision on the destination of the band trip. The meeting was held in the band room of the high school, a fairly small room in the basement-- no windows, dented instruments scattered here and there. The new band director was a heavy set, average sized man. He spoke with a voice that sounded like a loud baritone. “Please write down where you would like to go this year,” he said, as he passed out blank note cards. I thought to myself, “What is the most awesome place I can think of?” I thought about the last trip we went on in my freshman year of high school. We went to Belgium. I remember it being a beautiful place, but having a horrible time because of how poorly planned the trip was and also because there were not many fun activities to keep us busy. This time I was determined to make this a more memorable trip. It had to be a place where we would have an unlimited choice of things to do. As soon as that thought crossed my mind, the band director, Mr. Henderson, announced, “Due to funding, we will be limited to countries in Europe.” “In that case,” I thought, “Germany would be a fun place because some of my favorite cars are manufactured there.” So, without thinking any more about it, I wrote in big bold letters, “GERMANY”.
It had been decided, we were headed to Germany. There were so many things to do there, and the majority had decided. So, the last step was to find a roommate. The roommate I chose last time was one of my best friends, Fernando, a thin Hispanic kid who spoke fluent English....
