Video Review of “The Patriot”
The name of the movie I chose to review is “The Patriot” and I chose this movie because it is about the Revolutionary War. That is significant to me because I take great pride in our heritage to stop tyrannical governments and to be a free nation, for the people and by the people. Also I find it interesting that history tends to repeat itself and I feel this could happen again very soon. Everything that the original patriots fought for may be our destiny as well, sad in my opinion that it is coming to that only 233 years later. Think about is: unfair taxation without fair representation, the rights of every man, woman, and child being destroyed at will by politicians who feel the people are too stupid to lead and to think for themselves, everyday the government gets bigger and the private sector of business gets smaller and the list goes on and on. And I suspect that one day soon if the government doesn’t develop a more hands off system, they will have to live in fear of the people they enslave, but that is more of an issue for another day.
The main characters in this movie are all based on real people or they were real people during this time frame. The lead character Benjamin Martin played by Mel Gibson, is a retired soldier who fought and gained fame during the French and Indian War. There was no real person named Benjamin Martin who fought in the Revolutionary or French and Indian Wars in fact the character was based on five different individuals during this war: Continental General Daniel Morgan, Militia General Andrew Pickens, Militia General Francis Marion the “Swamp Fox”, Militia Colonel Elijah Clarke, and Militia General Thomas Sumter. Gabriel Martin, Ben’s eldest son, played by Heath Ledger is eager to join the Continental Army and after many skirmishes dies in battle.
