Synopsis:

This is the story about the great pearl and it is set in small town La Paz. The pearl was found and then lost by a fisherman Kino. The story was retold many times so it has taken roots in every man’s mind. One day Kino woke up very early and he looked at his young baby Coyotito, that was lying in the small box hanging on the ceiling. Then his wife Juana awekened too and she started doing some work. Suddenly a small poisonous scorpion fell to the hanging box, where the small baby was lying and hurted the child’s shoulder. The parents decided to go to a doctor who was in the town. Unfortunately Kino was very poor so a doctor refused to help them. Kino and Juana were full of anxiety and fear and they did not know what to do. During way home Kino found a nice big pearl, which was very worthy. When they arrived home Kino started to behave very bad because of the pearl. He was saying he was rich and he was planning a great future for his child, but there was a problem that Coyotito was dying next to him and he could not help him. Fortunately the doctor from the town came because he heard of the great pearl which was found by Kino. The doctor looked at the baby and gave him some medicine. He said that the baby would get well now. “How would you like to pay me the bill?”, asked the doctor. Kino said he was going to sell the pealr tomorrow . The next day he went to town with his brother Juán Thomas and a few neighbours. They wanted to sell the pearl but the dealers said them the pearl is not worthy, it was big but not great value. Kino thought he is cheated and he decided to sell it in capital city where he should not be cheated anymore. Before travel to the capital he came home and he saw his house in fire but fortunately his family was not there. Now he was sure the great pearl brought him bad luck.
