The Persistence of Learning over Time

Memory is defined as the persistence of learning over time through the storage and retrieval of information. Well if you asked me before this semester if I thought I had a good memory I would have said sure besides a few names here and there I have a pretty good memory. Now that I’ve been going to school after being out for close to ten years I realize maybe its not so great. Before doing this study I would say that my preferred method of memorizing information went along the lines of method of rehearsal. In the text book Exploring Psychology, seventh edition, by David G. Myers this method is defined as the conscious repetition of information , either to maintain it in consciousness or to encode it for storage. This method seemed to work ok for me I wasn’t getting A’s on tests but I seemed to be passing. I decided to switch to another method to see if my results could be vastly improved or not. The method I have chosen is mnemonic devices. As we find in the same text book as above it is defined as memory aids, especially those techniques that use vivid imagery and organizational devices. As we go on I will compare the results of both methods and determine which one worked best for me.

First we start off with the rehearsal method. As previously stated this is probably the way I have been memorizing information prier to this study. To me it seemed to be the obvious choice. bang something into your brain 5 or 6 times you should remember it. Well the class that I have chosen to do the comparison on is medical terminology 1101. In this class we learn about various parts and diseases of the body and memorize there medical terms, for example for front of body you have anterior and for the back of the body you have posterior. You are taking different medical terms and combining them to make a disease of and organ. For example some one who has an stomach inflammation you would take the word stomach and then take the medical term for it which is gastr then combine it...
