In literature, the environment has a big impact on the rest of the story. Sometimes this environment can mean the general feeling of the atmosphere between people. It could also mean the actual environment itself and how it affects the people living in it. In the play Rome and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the ambiance of hatred between the parents, the Capulets and the Montagues, affects their children and can lead to severe consequences. In the House on Mango Street by Sofia Ciceniaro, the neighborhood and the people in her neighborhood affect Ezperanza. Environment can be a key role in a piece of literature, and sometimes it is what brings about a conflict.
In Romeo and Juliet the Capulets and the Montagues detest each other. A reader is not informed why there is such hatred, but one can interpret that the hatred has to do with money and reputation. An example of them being able to do this is when Juliet says, “what is a Montague, what is a name…” , she does not get why people get labeled. The hatred between the Capulets and the Montagues affects Romeo and Juliet because they know that they are not allowed to be together so they have to get married and love each other in secret. This secrecy then ends up killing both of them and a serious of kinsmen on the way, such as Tybalt and Mercutio. The general atmosphere that the parents Capulets and Montagues have set really affects their young generation. Now whenever there is a Capulet or a Montague close, “they are sure to not escape a brawl”(Benvolio).
