The power of literature
No writer in history has received more praise and abuse than Oscar Wilde ,who was born in 1838 and won his reputation by his world wide known masterpieces lady windermere’s fan and the picture of dorian gray. With his unique perspective of art and life, wilde’s works swept through London in the late 19th century. Even today, his works continue to inspire millions of people around the world.
I’ve no idea of wilde until I took the essay appreciation course. By reading the essay preface to the picture of dorian gray, I was able to get close to his great mind. To be honest, his way of writing was too obscure for me to understand it all by myself. With the help of teacher’s explaination ,I finally understood what he wanted to express. I marveled at his singular understanding of art. By using paradox several times, he successfully set forth his views , concise and to the point.
It was a pleasant experience to appreciate those excellent work.. while reading the words on the paper, it seems like I was brought into the presence of the greatest mind that ever lived. I hear what he said and did, I see him as if he were really alive, share with him, enjoy with him. Yes, literature possess an essence of immortality. Those great thought can transcend time and space, which are fresh today as when they first pass through the author’s mind.
It is well known that literature has the power to change one’s life. It helps you grow mature ,provide you a broader view of the outside world. You may gain something new, which may change your attitude, you way of thinking, and your expectation to life. Classic literature undoubtedly will exert positive effects on you, as long as you be aware of the influence and be willing to make full use of them.
