Abstract

In recent years there has been greater interest in the role of emotional literacy in children’s emotional adjustment in school. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between Early Years Foundations Stage children’s emotional understanding and their teacher’s rating of their emotional competence using the Early Years Foundations Stage Profile (FSP) prior to them moving to key stage 1.

Data was collected from 30 children who participated in children’s emotional understanding interviews. Observations were included to provide additional clarification of evidence. Teacher-rated emotional competence interviews were conducted and school based assessments using the foundation stage profile (FSP) scale system were assessed. The findings highlighted that the teacher-rated FSP was, in general, accurate in assessing a child’s emotional competence but there were a few, significant, discrepancies identified. Furthermore, the findings suggested that a child’s emotional understanding may not necessarily correlate to the perception of their competence by the teacher and that this misjudgement could be to the detriment of the child. This study underlines the subjectivity of observation-based formative assessments and the need for more stringent evaluations.
