Nouf Al-Mutairi Ms. Wilson English Literature and Composition 9 5 October 2008 A Mind Set To Be Made An image in the readers mind helps reveal the theme behind the poem. Robert Frost gives enough details in his writing to provide the reader with a clear image of their own understanding. In the first stanza Robert Frosts illustrates the setting of the poem, and explains the importance of the two roads. The setting of the poem was drawn in a yellow wood “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood” (line 1). In which the reader would view the scene of two roads in autumn because leaves will be falling from the trees onto the road. In order, for the author to show the importance of the roads he uses tactile, a type of imagery to feel. “And sorry I could not travel both/And be one traveler, long I stood/And looked down one as far as I could/to where it bent in the undergrowth” (line 2, 3, 4, 5). In these four lines the author shows his regret that he couldn’t travel both roads. So you see, imagery helps get readers attention by thinking of the hidden theme behind the scenes. However; to expand his regret, Frost uses symbolism to represent the two roads. Symbolism is a way to represent other objects or thoughts, and using symbols, help keep the poem more interesting. Robert Frost’s poem “The Road not Taken” is a symbolic poem of the hard decisions that people must make in their lives. It is easy to understand the poem from its title, but it is somewhat difficult to understand the roads. The two roads appear to be similar and different throughout the poem. However; the two roads symbolizes the choice he has to make to move on in his life. Although, it was a hard choice, Robert Frost regrets the fact that he will never be able to come back and take the other path.
