The Sea Inside
The Sea Inside was very sad and moving, but it was good entertainment telling about a real truth that can happen to anyone. Ramon, played by Javier Bardem, is confined to a bed because he is paralyzed from the neck down. One day when he was out on the rocks by the ocean, he decided that he would want to dive into the water from the cliffs, but he didn’t realize that the water was very shallow. He hit his head hard on the ocean floor and broke his neck. Because of his injury, he forced his brother and sister-in-law to take care of him for 27 years of Ramon’s life. They took care of his every need. Ramon’s nephew, Javi, helped him bring his inventions to life. Javi helped Ramon create things such as a computer that Ramon could use, a device used for writing, and also a wheelchair that would have Ramon sit comfortably in.
After 27 years of being confined to a bed, Ramon decided that it was time to fight the court to have them legally allow him to have an assisted suicide. He wants to end his life because he feels that he has lost his dignity because of his physical handicap. He hired a lawyer named Julia, but Julia has a degenerative disease that will eventually end her life. Ramon didn’t want just any lawyer, he wanted a lawyer that would be able to understand his position on life and Julia did just that. Because of her disease she had a very hard time walking and eventually lost the ability of her legs altogether.
While Julia was still somewhat healthy, she, along with the help of Javi, helped Ramon published a book filled with Ramon’s poetry. During the time while she was helping Ramon, she ended up falling in love with him. Ramon told Julia that her smell started his fantasies about her. During this time, Julia promised Ramon that when the book was finally released, she would aid Ramon in his suicide and she would die with him.
