"I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will," said Jane Eyre (386). Jane Eyre is the main character in Charlotte Bronte's novel and also a valuable work in the history of English literature. Eyre looks ordinary in appearance, but she has a beautiful and lyrical heart. She is outspoken, proud and willing to learn. Although she was an orphan treated abusively by her aunt and cousin, she never gives up on herself. The story of Jane Eyre tells us that women gain power from knowledge. How is her story relate to our real life?
Eyre was an orphan; she was adopted by her aunt and uncle. She did not have a pleasant childhood because her family members treated her like a servant. She had been sent to Lowood Institute, a charity school, when she was ten year-old. After many hard times, she became a versatile teacher. Carissa Tjen, an international college student in California, just finished reading the novel Jane Eyre. "Jane Eyre holds her beliefs tightly and does not give up to the pressure that society gives her," Tjen said. The living situation is abominable, and under the pressure of common customs. By virtue of hard work and wisdom, Eyre maintains her dignity; she never loses the faith to seek freedom. Her success had the direct relationship with the knowledge she learned from books and the education she received in Lowood Institute. Whether knowledge is indispensable to females today or not, it is worth pondering.
American women began to strive for women's rights continuously since 1848. After one and half centuries of struggle, American women have made steady progress.
