Established by state delegates in the Philadelphia Convention of 1787, one of the American Constitution’s key purposes was to protect the people of America’s rights to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness, and to prevent the formation of a tyrannical government. Every person would have equal opportunity to participate in the running of the government and/or be represented in government, and no person or group would ever gain absolute power. The system of government in America is divided into three branches – Executive, Legislature and Judiciary. In order to run the kind of democratic government which America aimed to maintain, certain democratic values would have to be upheld. The key values include representation, participation and accountability in each of the three branches of government. Representation is the expression of the people’s preferences in government. This is essential to democracy as it ensures that the key purpose of government remains to serve the people; to enforce laws which protect the people’s rights. Participation is the opportunity for all people to be involved in government by holding parliamentary positions. This is essential to democracy as it ensures that those in power are not foreign, and therefore have the people’s best interests in mind. Accountability is the system of checks and balances; where each branch has equal and separate purposes and responsibilities, and each has the power to confirm or disprove many of the decisions made in the other branches. This is essential to democracy as it prevents concentration of power in any one particular branch.
