The thunder – I knew what it meant. No question now but I knew what it all meant. And I wish to heaven I did not know…
Driving, slanting rain was sheeting down torrentially from the black billowing clouds. Even through closed doors one could hear the high thin sound, part whine, part whistle of a gale force wind. The floorboards creak while the ramparts appear to surrender against the rampage of the wind. The trees outside curve against the wind while their branches; twisting and turning, project dark and ominous shadows against the walls.
I know how dangerous it is, but I have no other option. I simply must go outside and search for her, save him from the jeopardy he might encounter. As I open the front door the wind came blowing inside, slicing through my many layers of clothing, slashing all the way through my bones. The gusty terrain outside looks dark and perilous and muddy streams are flowing vigorously across the plains. My insides turn apprehensively as my frantic eyes stare into the murky void, searching for him.
Breathing a deep gulp of air; filling my lungs to the brim I step out of my safety zone, into the oblivion. As my feet hit the muddy surface I knew my fate is sealed, but I can’t turn around. His survival depends on my fortitude. The once tranquil brook malformed into a wild menacing river, devouring anything in its way, hungry for more… It is there where I saw a token of hope, a light at the end of the tunnel. His fresh footsteps are etched into the sandbanks beside the river. Hope swelled up inside of me, filled my heart. Perhaps it is not too late after all! Is it possible that he is still alive?
All of a sudden my foot slipped and I fell down the slope, into the torrent of water below me. The arctic water seep through my clothes, freezing my insides while I try to keep my head above the water. It is then when I saw him. He was standing on the riverbank, smiling and waving goodbye.
