The Westing Game, by Ellen Raskin, is a mystery story about how sixteen heirs of Sam Westing came together and played the Westing Game to find out who murdered Sam Westing. The winner of the Westing Game would receive two hundred million dollars. The story took place September first, when the sixteen heirs of Sam Westing moved into Sunset tower on the outskirts of Westing town. This story follows the sixteen heirs of Sam Westing, which consisted of Madame Hoo, James Hoo, Doug Hoo, J. J. Ford, Angela Wexler, Turtle Wexler, Jake Wexler, Gracie Wexler, Sandy Mcsouthers, Denton Deere, Chris Theodakoris, Theo Theodakoris, Sydelle Pulaski, Flora Buam, Otis Amber, and Berthe Erica Crow. The moral of the story is to be yourself, and not hide who you really are to the people around you.
The story begins with Otis Amber, delivering letters to the soon to be tenants of Sunset tower from Barney Northrup. The tenants move into the different apartments in Sunset tower on September first, and became acquainted with one another quickly. After moving into the new apartment, Doug Hoo dared Turtle Wexler on Halloween night to go into the Westing house and for every minute she was in there he would pay her two dollars. On Halloween night when Turtle was in the Westing house she found the dead body of Sam Westing lying in bed and runs out of the Westing house. The next day, selected tenants of Sunset tower were given letters to come to the Westing house that night to the reading of Sam Westing’s will. When the sixteen heirs of Sam Westing arrived E. J. Plum began to read Sam Westing’s will which told the tale of the Westing game. The Westing game informed the sixteen heirs that one of them murdered Sam Westing and whoever found out who killed him earned the prize of two hundred million dollars.
