In This Boy’s Life, Jack goes through life changing scenarios that fit many quotes that the author chose for this book. “The first duty in life is to assume a pose. What the second is, no one has yet discovered.” “He who fears corruption fears life.” These quotes relate to Jack in many ways because as he’s going through all the harsh points in his life, he’s not afraid to face what’s ahead of him and to find out who he really is.

What the second is, no one has yet discovered.” We all have our own ways of not being our true selves, but as long as you know who you really are, it doesn't matter. For example, we all have different personalities depending on who we’re with. We know who we are at the moment, but everything can change as we go through the harsh stages of life. Everyone can think different things of you because of how you act between other people; as long as you know who you really are, it doesn’t matter what other people think you are.
“He who fears corruption fears life.” Life is full of scary things, but the only thing to fear is fear itself. If you live life with the mentality of corruption as your best friend, there’s no way anyone would progress through life. Being afraid of corruption means not taking chances; without chances, you wouldn’t know what lies ahead of you. Jack’s life relates to this because he isn’t afraid to face new things.
The author chose these quotes because they help Jack conquer what he goes through in his life. If he did not want to find out who he really is, he wouldn’t want to be “green” or try through his life. If he feared corruption, he wouldn’t want to go to new places or try new things, such as going to France or live with his father. These quotes built up motivation for Jack to keep moving forward, and he didn’t stop to find out who he really is.
