Most people in our society have a view that when someone has a good education, that individual has a higher worth than one without education. Someone with a high education they attend college, university or take part in further studies after high school. But they are shouldn’t be going to school just to get their degrees. They should be going to become more educated, so that they can make educated decisions in their lives. Schools need to change. Learning in a prison cell was probably easier for Malcolm X than learning in some of the schools. I believe if we let people learn what they want, when they want and how they want, they will learn more.
In this essay Malcolm X describes how he educated himself while he was in prison and how it changed his whole life. His interest in learning how to read and write became because of one of his prison convicts whose name was Bimbi. Bimbi took control over all conversations because of his huge knowledge. This made Malcolm X kind of jealous and motivated him to start learning. He was never able to learn to read or write. He thought it was the perfect opportunity while he was in prison. Malcolm X got a dictionary from the library and wrote down all the words on the first page and their definition. He learned how to write, slowly at first, and then he got faster. After he finished writing down the whole dictionary he read it over and was filled up with happiness because he read his own hand writing and that was a big accomplishment to him. Malcolm was finally out of the darkness of being illiterate and was free to discover new things through books.
I found myself on the same boat when Malcolm said “trying to write simple English, I not only wasn’t articulate, I wasn’t even functional”. I’m a student and the last year was my first year at school. And that was the most difficult time because my English in not really well and I was worrying that I’d not pass any of my classes that I’ve been taken. But after...
