Thoreau Experiment Essay

Henry David Thoreau, a well known 19th century transcendentalist, wrote a literary work name Walden which explores his experiences outside of society and in the woods by a pond with no one else and no materialistic objects for about two years. This ideal of human sacrifice can be expressed through the giving up of materialistic desires of my own. I decided to go a week without using a computer and without any unhealthy food of any sort. The experience is one that I think has actually mildly changed me as a person. When engulfing into such a task I did not realize how difficult it was going to be to get accustomed to this. If it was not for my sense of guilt and my durable responsibility I would not have been able to accomplish this task. At the beginning of the experiment it would be hard for me to stay away from even thoughts of food or of playing computer games or using face-book. It was towards the middle of the experiment that I hit a clear climax of emotions. I was now even getting angry at my inability to consume foods I liked and to check my favorite websites. A day after, about on Friday afternoon, I sat in my room and thought about my actions in regards to the project and realized how silly I was being and how addicted I have become to such useless materialistic desires such as the computer and unhealthy food. My over all body began to feel a sense of cleanness from eating healthy foods and I now feel more energetic through out the day. As for the computer portion, I observed the moments in which I was tempted to use it and I recognized the fact that every time I would stop myself, it was that easy to ignore it and use my time more wisely. As hard as it was to not eat foods that have now become almost a part of me, I have realized the variety of foods in the school cafeteria and am now much more open in food choice not just there but at home as well.
