Three Traits of a Successful Leader

In doing my research I came upon this add that read “ WANTED: Individuals able to learn and keep learning; determined to listen, watch, and recognize what’s happening; committed to change wherever and whenever needed, opportunity seekers who know how to identify the best people and get the most out of them.” (Management Notes, 1998) I immediately thought to myself, now what an excellent way to define a leader. A successful leader believe it or not has so many traits that brought them to where they are; however, I have selected three traits which I believe are the most significantly needed for a successful leader. A few specific skills I believe can benefit an individual tremendously in leadership and success include knowledge, skill and attitude. People could learn each of the skills pre-mentioned. Each must be applied for the benefits to be recognized.

The first trait is one I think everyone can agree on, knowledge. Knowledge is a key element in achieving success. Knowledge is not simply a collection of degrees and certificates. Knowledge cannot accurately be measured one’s grade point average or by years of seniority in the workplace. True knowledge is equivalent to understanding. In leadership, understanding what our followers not only need but also expect from us provides us with the practical working knowledge needed for success. Without an understanding of such, people are destined to wander aimlessly from one insignificant task to another. Knowledge of group dynamics can be helpful to the Management in developing productive work groups, effective administration of committees and developing skills in running meetings. (Menon, 2004, p. 4)
