McMichael County is an unappealing place to live, largely because of the many large industrial factories which power the manufacturing needs of many large companies. These industries are important in oder for the economy to thrive, but so is tourism. To help the county look moreattractive , the government built an aquarium. However, the animals in the aquarium could not survive from its source of water, the river, because of the industries which are located further upstream. Reports received from each industry allowed us to identify ions of interest that are part of the chemical waste produced by each industry.
To find which industry or industries, and their respective ion of interest, is responsible for polluting the river, several substances will be mixed in order to determine if a particular ion is present. If the ion is present, a solid will form in the substance and that will be proof that whichever industry emits that ion is partially responsible for the pollution in the river. The graph below shows each industry located on the river, their compound of interest, ion of interest, substances mixed, if a solid formed when the substances were mixed, and ultimately if it is responsible for the pollution in the river. In the case of Sensodexx Toothpaste, whose ion of interest is K+, and Hot Tamalee Fire Safety and Personal Protective Equipment, whose ion of interest is Na+, a difference approach was taken to determine if they were sources of pollution. A substance, which is known to contain either K+ or Na+ was used to saturate a wooden stick. That wooden stick was then placed over a flame which produced a flame of a different color. A color of yellow would prove that Na+ was present in the substance while a purple flame would prove that K+ was present in the substance. The color of the flame produced was yellow, proving that Na+ was present in the substance, and not K+.
