Tools For Mans Survival
Clank... Clank... Clank, the shackles of the chains that are bounded on Prometheus hands. He is condemned to 10,000 years chained onto a boulder, but he does this for the benefit of mankind. Prometheus gives man tools for independence and Io hope, but it is his stubbornness, which ultimately contributes to his downfall rendering him a tragic hero.
Prometheus gives man several tools so they can be free and independent. Before Prometheus “Man had no signs reliable to mark winter and scented spring and harvest time, mindless was an they did until Prometheus show the dubles rise and setting of stars” (Aeschylus 35). He understood when and where to harvest. They didn’t know how to do this until Prometheus showed them how to. They really had a scene of no direction before Prometheus gave man knowledge of things that they can do by themselves. He did this so they wouldn’t have to be dependent on all the gods. “In order to help man become more efficient farmers Prometheus is the first to yoke the animals in service to the strap and lay down them of mans excessive toll” (Aeschylus 35) . He showed them how to harness the animals and how to hunt them. This is another thing Prometheus showed man so they can have a better life. Before this, man just waited on the gods to give them food and prey. “The inventor I, who many a shape did show of science to mankind”. (Aeschylus 35) He showed them new science and the way of life. New medicines, languages, and numerals.
Io was a priestee of Hera at Argos. Zeus fell in love with her, but to protect her from Hera’s jealously he transformed her into a cow. Hera wanted the cow so Zeus gave it to her. She first had Io be watched by a many eyed beast called Argos, but then it was killed by Hermes. “Why should I go on living? What’s to lose hurling myself head first from this stark peak”.
