Increasing the effectiveness of groups or teams is a challenge that must be addressed at different times in one’s career. Team dynamics change over time as well as the members of the team, but keeping effectiveness high should remain a consistent goal. Teams may face challenges as they perform their tasks and will need good skills to work through them. This training program will focus on learning team A’s collaborative efforts in looking at the challenges and benefits of working in teams.
First it is important to understand that teams do not always mesh together seamlessly and therefore will face challenges. Teams face different challenges, which will not be the same for all teams. Once formed the team should complete a team charter, similar to the one available from University of Phoenix. Using a charter will keep the team focused on the tasks they have to complete. The charter contains the contact information for the members, a skill inventory, team goals, ground rules, and how to handle conflicts. The charter is an important first step so that as the team progresses they clearly know the expectations they will be held accountable. The skill inventory will prove helpful to distribute the workload and will ensure effectively utilizing the team’s skills.
Our team identified one of the biggest challenges of working in a group is finding a mutually agreeable time for group meetings. Members each have different schedules with their employment, family commitments, leisure activities, and class work. To manage these responsibilities the team members should have good time management skills. Learning these skills takes time but there are resources available to help members hone time management skills.
