Troy Duster and Connell West

In 1970, Troy Duster wrote his very first book The Legislation of Morality: Drugs, Crime, and Law. In the book Duster explains how drug addiction among different groups of people is dealt with differently in the judicial system. For example: among Euro American women, drug addiction was defined as a health problem to be dealt with privately. But when the addicts were poor young men, it turned into a crime shown to publicly punish them. In his most recent book, Duster is one of the contributing authors of White-washing Race: The Myth of a Color Blind Society, published in 2003. The book talks about racism in the United States, addressing how racial discrimination is present in the American society. It also talks about the failures of citizens are a side effect of inequality prevailing in America. White-Washing was highly praised among critics, winning him the Benjamin Hooks award.
In addition to his numerous publications, he also takes part in organizations. Duster served as president to the American Sociological Association (ASA) from 2004 to 2005, currently a member of the Social Science Research Council, and served on various committees. He is also a recipient of rewards like: the Guggenheim Fellowship at the London School of Economics, Doctor of Letters from Williams College, and DuBois-Johnson-Frazier Award from the ASA.
Dr. Cornel West has over thirteen books under his name. He made his debut into written publications with his first book Prophesy Deliverance: An Afro-American Revolutionary Christianity in 1982. One of his most influential books, Race Matters (Beacon, 1993), contains some of the most powerful essays concerning issues today’s African Americans and keeps a creatively fresh look on the issue which excites the reader.
