Troy Maxson changes throughout the play fences beginning with his job as a garbage collector. While working as a garbage collector, Troy is upset the colored men have to lift while whites get to drive. He thinks it’s unfair and files a complaint with his union rep. He explains the situation to Bono his friend of 30 years but bono thinks Filing his complaint is going to get them fired. Troy makes another transition when his friend bono questions him about his affairs with Alberta, a woman who make him feel like he is floating on a cloud. He tries to deny any relations with her but the rays of happiness shines across Troy face talking about her. Troy see Alberta every Saturday takes her out and buy her drinks. Their courtship makes him feel relax and all of his burdens and problems are gone during their time together. Another part in the play where we see Troy’s character changes when his son Lyons comes by the house to ask for money. He sees his son as a lazy and irresponsible man who want something for nothing .Troy becomes irritated by Lyons request for money and responds in a belligerent manner “he needs a job, the only time he come around is when he wants money “. When his wife rose told him to give Lyons the money troy got even angrier. Through all the bickering troy goes against his word and give Lyons the ten dollars. The next morning rose talks to troy about Ms. Pearl a lady that hit the number for a dollar. He jumps the gun by implicating that it is foolish her and Lyons play numbers. Rose replies “its something me to do”. She gives an example of Pope who hit the numbers and bought a restaurant letting troy know good things can come from playing numbers. He became furious and say’s “he can’t stand niggers like that”. Troy felt anyone that did not earn money by hard work was incapable of his respect especially someone like Pope who got lucky playing numbers.
