How Trust Affects Interpersonal Relationships
The backbone of any relationship is trust, be it interpersonal or any other form of relationship. Trust is the bedrock upon which any two or more individuals, organizations, society, etc.can coexist amicably. The absence of trust leads to division, bigotry, anarchy, chaos, delay, and sometimes death. That trust is the backbone to human relations makes it difficult to give it a particular definition hence; different definitions have been put forward from a variety of perspectives. Trust as a choice behavior can be seen as the willingness to take risk by acting on the basis of words, action, or decisions of others. Trust is rational decision, motivated primarily by perception of risk, concerning either probability of successful cooperation or the possibility of transaction cost reduction. Trust also can be said to be a social orientation toward other people and society in general. Because of the importance of trust, organizations presently invest in conditions that facilitate trust among members to survive and remain effective.
Trust is normally based on a premise and can be measured. Some classifications if trust are:
1. Knowledge base trust: – this kind of trust based on prior interactions and cooperation.
2. Calculus based trust: - this kind of trust is found in new relationships and is formed between partners or team members who do not have any prior connections.
3. Identification based trust: - this kind of trust is predicated upon identification of the other party’s desires and intentions
