When you think of a hero, what do you think of, who do you, think of? Superman Batman or Spiderman. Yes, these were all heroes in our childhood but what about Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, and Malcolm X. These were great heroes of my ancestry. Heroes are all people that try to help others around them and suffer longsuffering for others. There are heroes around of everyday whether we are aware of it or not. The two poems, ‘Wing Road’ by Eamon Grennan and ‘Ex- Basketball Player’ by John Updike, demonstrate the heroes that we call our neighbors.
In the poem ‘Wing Road’ by Eamon Grennan demonstrates a local hero we call a trashman. The trashman must do away with all the ‘leftover’ things we don’t want anything to do with, that’s why we throw them in the trashcan. The man illustrated in the poem wasn’t ashamed of his work and often smiled, lines 12 –15. He sparkles in the sunlight, described in the first stanza of the poem. Even birds stop and acknowledge his presents. He was the exact definition of a hero. Birds praised him just as Nelson Mandela is praise by people all over the world. He endured longsuffering just as Martin Luther King endured long suffering for blacks when his house down by whites. The trashman make the cities better to live in and deserve the recognition of a hero.
In the poem ‘Ex- Basketball Player’ by John Updike, Flick also demonstrates a local hero that we witness everyday when we past a local garage. Flick, unlike the trashman in the other poem, was known throughout the town as the best basketball player around. That gave him the recognition of Sammy Sosa when he broke racial barriers in baseball single handedly. Flick is a regular hard worker that gets tired, stanza 4, just as Rosa Parks was tired that day she refused to give up her seat on the bus. Flick was a mechanic in Berth’s garage just as Mary J.
