Understanding the Book Before Judging the Cover

Development of a character throughout a novel helps the reader have a stronger understanding of the plot, and is a way to connect the readers to the characters. In reality, people’s initial perception of one another is based off of what you first learn about them, whether it’s their true selves, or their imitation to be something they are not. In today’s society it isn’t unpopular to come across people who act differently in association to who they are talking too, or in which kind of environment they are in; however the hardest task is for one to desirer if what they are seeing is that persons real absolute self, or an imitation of something or someone they wish to be. There are so many influences around the world today; that it has become hard to distinguish a person’s real self to their imitation to be someone they are not. Jane Austen's and Henry James’ both illustrate their characters in a way in which they unfold as their story continues. Unlike many novelists that create their characters to be absolute from the beginning, Austen and James’ have a way of unraveling their characters as more of the story develops, leaving them open at the beginning of the story, and closing in more as the novel comes to an end. Austen and James perfect the use of belatedness perception as they don’t give away all of the their characters personalities, but more so allow specific qualities to shine through as needed; in order to help provide strength and power to the plot, and engage the reader into the truth of what is going on. Both Austen and James use the formula in which we as a reader almost become confused as to who the characters really are, while over time transforming them into someone completely different, ultimately leaving it up to the readers to acknowledge and determine the true selves of the characters.
