Uniforms in Our Public Schools: Good Tradition or Outdated Argument?
Should school uniforms be a part of the public school system? This has been an ongoing argument for years between parents and their children. I think uniforms in the school promote equality and reduce the stigma for parents to keep their children in the latest fashions with a declining economy. It also takes the pressure off children who cannot keep up with the latest fashions from being an outcast because of their financial background.
Then the other side to the argument would wearing a school uniform protect children from bullying or harassment or will children adapt and find new ways to bully and harass. According to the opinion of a junior at Clovis High School Lindsey Salazar she said, “Wearing a uniform constricts a child’s self image and takes away their individuality.” Is this an opinion of a high school student wanting to rebel against the system.
According to an article from Family Education it stated, According to proponents of school uniforms, a wealth of potential benefits will follow their adoption: socioeconomic equalization, reduction in student violence and theft related to clothing, increased attendance, restriction of gang activity, better identification of school intruders, reduction of peer pressure, improved ability to focus in class, and better grades (Kendrick, 2000-2010).
President Clinton in his 1996 State of the Union address promoted and ordered the distribution of school uniform implementation manuals to every school district in the nation.
