P3 – Describe the differences between raster (bitmap) and vector graphics
You have set up as a volunteer at the community centre. In order to give you more responsibility with more graphics related duties at the community centre, they have asked you to prove that you know what you are doing. They have asked for a description of the differences between vector and raster (bitmap) images and the functions and features of types of Software out there to work with graphics.
The Centre would like you to describe and explain the differences between Raster and vector graphics
They want your description to include:-
o Images to show some differences between vector and raster images
o An image showing pixilation and examples of images for both
o The advantages and disadvantages of each graphic type
o The best uses for both types of graphics
o Include examples of file extensions/formats (e.g. ‘.bmp’, ‘.png’, ‘.jpg’)
1. Definition of Bitmap/ Raster Graphics
Bitmap is a file which is used for storing pictures and consists of pixels which look like tiny blocks. This is viewable through a piece of paper, a monitor or any other device with a screen. They are stored in image files which are different formats.
2. Clearly Explain the Difference between the Bitmap and Vector images
Bitmap images are based on pixel patterns, when you zoom in on a bitmap image you can see the individual pixels which are making up the image, more websites support bitmap images because of their file extensions. Bitmaps also are better for images with wider colour gradations.

Adobe Photoshop, Corel Paint Shop Pro, Adobe Fireworks.
• You usually see what you are painting in real time, when using the paintbrush.
• Much easier to make a natural appearance with watercolours bleeding into each other.
• Scanners usually output bitmap.
