Unknown Object 1

The object under investigation is a near life size, solid bronze statue of a human wearing what seems to be a full length skirt of some sort. Due to the statue being solid bronze we can rule out the possibility of it being from either the Paleolithic or Neolithic eras. We can eliminate the Paleolithic period because it was during the Old Stone Age where there was no metal. The same can be said about the Neolithic period where stone was still the material of choice and metals had not started to be used for tools or sculpting materials. We can also eliminate both New and Old Kingdom Egypt. We can rule out these because since the sculpture is a near life size replica, for it to be Egyptian it would most likely have to be of a pharaoh since for their burial, a near life statue was usually built as the Ka statue, this was especially important in Old Kingdom Egypt. However, it is known that all the pharaohs dressed in the same manner, they wore a short skirt that only went down to the knees and their chest was bare. They also wore a typical headdress, but since the head of this statue is missing we can’t judge that aspect. Furthermore, there are no signs of any type of hieroglyphs which would most likely have been present if it were of Egyptian descent. In addition, the most common sculpting material was diorite and bronze was very uncommon to be found in both Old and New Kingdom Egypt. This leaves us with the Mesopotamian era. This piece does fit in with the characteristics of the period so we can safely say that this unknown object came from an ancient Mesopotamian culture. The Mesopotamian era coincided with the Bronze Age so it makes sense that the sculpture is made of solid bronze. The garment that the person in the sculpture is wearing closely resembles that of the statues of Gudea which helps to support that is it from this period. In addition, the way in which the arms are positioned matched up with other typical characteristics of this period. Unlike New and...
