Nowadays in our society, the problem of unmarried mother is getting more serious. From the research of The Family Planning Association of Hong Kong, it shows that in the past five years, there was an average of 2700 female, which were under twenty six years old had seek for abortion. Age between 19 and 20 mothers occupied 30%; 16 and 18 occupied 20%, and age under 16 mothers occupied 30-40%. In a real case in Hong Kong, the youngest unmarried mother was 12 twelve years old. Obviously, the age of “unmarried mother” is getting lower.
What are the factors that lead to this situation? There are mainly three ambits we concerned. Firstly, it is about education. Teenagers are active; adventurous and curious. They have interest in all kinds of thing, especially sex. Why? Before the stage of being a teenager, they do not have much sense about the differences between themselves and their opposite sex. However, the curiosity developed in teenage rises their desire to know more about their opposite sex. Under the insufficient sex education from parents and schools, teenagers easily have sex without any contraceptive methods, and rarely can be critical enough to think of the rightness and the consequences under the influence of sexual passion. Secondly, it is about culture. Although we are Chinese, our society started to accept more Western culture involved in our daily life. Comparing with Chinese culture, Western culture focuses more on the freedom of will. In another words, Western culture is more “opened”. It emphasizes on the immediate will rather than the result. This kind of thinking makes teenagers think less about the value of sex in our nature, but an entertainment instead, that they will overlook the seriousness of pregnancy. Thirdly, it is about our mass media. Recently, there are more and more sexual scenes involved in no matter TV programmes; movies, or magazines.
