The establishment of farm fresh supermarket began in 1957, residents put forward several suggestions for the store name. This neighborhood grocery store prides itself on community involvement such as; CHKD, Military, Breast cancer walks, hunger relief, food bank donations, and holiday workshops for local residence and kids. The aim is to help and create stronger communities through charitable giving and supporting non-profit organizations with a focus in community relief efforts. Hampton Roads is a major military area and honors their military through store discounts and community partnerships. Ending hunger within the communities is Farm Fresh’s core charitable mission. Donations are given to support hunger relief programs and food distribution efforts. According to SuperValu Inc. (2014), “From the very beginning, community involvement has been an important part of Farm Fresh and currently operates 41 stores in Hampton Roads, Virginia” (About Farm Fresh). Farm Fresh Supermarket assists The Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughter’s (CHKD) through local community garage sales.
The funds from the sales are donated to CHKD to help local children with cancer and blood disorders. Local commitment to education is another top priority, 123-4 community programs and partnerships with vendors such as box tops for education, and receipt collection programs. Providing for customers extends beyond the store and involves enhancing the quality of life for the consumers and associates. With over 400 years of American History, Hampton Roads has a large military presence.
