Cultures are giving me messages that shape my perceptions and ideas of me and others. I have been introduced to the western culture when I came to United States . People are friendly to me, even though I do not know them. That time, I felt so welcome and did not feel afraid to talk to American people. In the school, I had a lot of good and bad times. The bad time was on the first day of school. I felt so depressed because I could not contribute anything during the group discussion. But as days passed by, I am often chosen to be the group discussion leader in the class and be at the top student in some of my classes. Working with different cultures is complicated, but it is not impossible.
One thing that I realized, even though culture is good, it can also be a negative conflict in my life. I have to respect everyone’s culture because people can get irritated by it. Sometimes in school I expect my friends to the same thing like I do because I always think that my culture is right. But, I realized that I can not expect people to think the same way like I do. Every people are different from another. Other thing that I learned that culture is a very sensitive thing. I have to be careful and respect their culture. I also have a lot of friends that are not Asian. They have a different views and priorities than mine, but I respect their views because they also respect my cultures. Acknowledging cultures can help me to make better choices so other people will not feel offended by my actions.
