Question One-The Summer Before the Dark Question 2- Woman on the Edge of Time Woman on the Edge of Time is the story of two different times. 1976, represents the time of oppression while the future 2173, represents a time of what women could be. The parallel relationships between Jackrabbit and Skip, and Connie and Luciente show the contrast between the two different societies and their effects. Connie and Luciente are parallel characters. They have similar features and both have daughters. Connie’s character in 1976 is the persona and Luciente’s character in the future is the self. Luciente’s life represents what women could be and what women of Connie’s time wanted. Connie’s central problem is that she has no self and she tries to build it using men as the vehicle. She comes close to finding her ‘self’ with Claude because he gives her a sense that they are a family but when that relationship fails she is back to being lost. What Marge Piercy wants people to see from Connie’s experience is that you can’t use a man to find yourself; it will never work out if you do. Question 3- The Bluest Eye Claudia is the only one in the story with a self. This is because she had love and acceptance from her mother. She sees images for what they are and can see that they are a problem. Claudia doesn’t see why people like dolls because she doesn’t see their beauty. She rips a doll apart to find that all that’s in the middle is metal and nothing that could make the doll extraordinary. Pecola’s life becomes the example that Claudia sees that she needs to avoid. Cholly and Pauline demonstrate how society uses scapegoats to displace anger on to the weaker (men to women to children). Mr. Breedlove projects his anger onto his wife. His hatred towards his wife comes from the first time he had sex. When he beats his wife its really him beating the mend who humiliated him. Pauline represents the terrible mother. She neglects her home and her children. She projects her...
