Chapter 6 Vocabulary words

1. Absolute exemption- where husbands are not prosecuted for spousal rape under any condition
2. Acquaintance rape- where the victim and offender know each other by acquaintances and a crime takes place (rape)
3. Anger rape- involves a conscious attempt to harm and humiliate the victim
4. Crisis- whenever a situation poses a serious danger or threat to the person’s self
5. Crisis reaction repair cycle- a cycle that victims go through, involving three stages, during their recovery, 1st phase is called impact, 2nd phase is called the recoil period, and the 3rd stage is called reorganization, which marks the end of the cycle
6. Date rape- where the victim and offender know one another and are engaged in friendly, non-combative interaction up until the attack
7. Forensic examination- examinations where the doctors lacked appropriate training in evidence collection or conveyed a less than sympathetic attitude toward the victim
8. Gang rape- rapes that are fueled by a desire to prove oneself to peers
9. Impact- “shock”; “distress”, victims run the entire gamut of emotions during this period, some go through denial, others blame themselves and ask what they did to deserve this humiliation, sometimes there are expressions of outrage, anger, and revenge; confusion, fear, helplessness, guilt, self-pity, and feelings of worthlessness, if left unchecked, can ravage victims during this stage

13. Non-stranger rape- include “date rape” and “acquaintance rape,” among other things
14. Partial exemption- where the state may allow prosecution if the parties are separated, are in the process of obtaining a divorce, or have taken other steps to void or nullify the marriage
