In the movie Bend it like Beckham, an Indian girl named Jess has a deep passion for playing soccer. Her room is decorated with soccer posters of David Beckham. But playing soccer in her Indian culture isn’t acceptable for an Indian girl. Her mom would much rather Jess begin to learn how to cook and start looking for a husband, just like her sister Pinky who is engaged. Although her family doesn’t like Jess playing soccer, she still goes and plays with some guys at the park and her closest friend Tony. While playing in the park one day a girl named Jules watches Jess play with the guys and approaches her. She tells Jess to come and try out for the girl soccer team that she is on. When Jess tries out for the team she meets the coach, Joe. Once Joe sees how great of a player Jess is, he accepts her into the team. But Jess ends up lying to Joe about her parents being fine with the idea of her being on the soccer team. In reality, her parents had no clue, Jess lied to them and told them she had gotten a job. But Jess’s parents end up finding out that she joined the team when she goes shoe shopping for her sister’s wedding. Jess had told her mother that she was going out to buy a pair of shoes to wear to her sister’s wedding, but she actually went out to buy herself a pair of soccer cleats. Pinky ended up grabbing the bag of cleats out of Jess’s hands and showing her parents. This is because her fiancé’s parents had thought they had seen Jess kissing a boy, so they decided to call off the wedding. After discovering that, Jess’s parents banned her from continuing to play on the soccer team. Joe realizes that Jess has stopped coming to practice and asks Jules about why she hasn’t showed up. She ends up telling Joe that Jess’s parents don’t let her play soccer. So Joe attempts to go and talk to Jess’s parents, but he doesn’t convince them.
