Soc 246- Final Report Growing Up American: How Vietnamese Children Adapt to Life in the Section I: Introduction This study explored what contributed and helped shape the children of Vietnamese immigrants. It looked at factors such as the class along with racial constrictions, and the support from their social relations. Although they looked at these, Zhou and Bankston mainly focused on the community as a primary factor and focused on how it impacted the adaptation of socioeconomically disadvantaged Vietnamese youth. This objective is important because the new generation will be the first to grow up or be born in America. Most will try and succeed economically and socially. Yet, this quest is further complicated by their parents who want them to be like Americans but also follow the ways of their culture. With the obstacles placed before them economically, socially, and culturally, we must learn by what measure these children will succeed. This book focused on the Vietnamese population in Versailles, New Orleans. The majority of the Vietnamese had a low socioeconomic status and was composed of low skilled residents who depended heavily on public assistance. Due to "white flight" the population consisted mainly of blacks and Vietnamese. The research methodology used to address Zhou and Bankston's questions consisted of two surveys given to neighborhood high school students and an interview involving adults of various occupations, and a hundred youths. The survey asked ninety eight questions pertaining to identity, language proficiency in English and in Vietnamese, grades, cultural values, aspirations, and the demographic/socioeconomic characteristics of children and their parents.
