I must admit that I have been surprised at how stimulating and thought‐provoking I have found this module to be. Having spent seven years in practice I have gained skills and knowledge in many of the areas being assessed informally and almost subconsciously. In preparing and writing the essays for the module I have drawn together many disparate strands of knowledge, some of which I barely knew I possessed, and have for the first time studied many management and communications issues in a structured and genuinely productive manner. While I have always enjoyed engaging in continuing professional development, I have found the experience of completing a programme of self‐directed study and written work to be a welcome reintroduction to more focused education. The experience has served to motivate me in many areas of my work, clinical as well as managerial, and has made me even more eager to continue along the route to completing a Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice. As an undergraduate I received no formal training in communications skills or in delivering client satisfaction. However, these are two key areas in which the veterinary surgeon is expected to excel if he is to enjoy his time in practice. Through my time spent studying over the last number of months I have gained a greater appreciation of the expectations and perceptions of our clients. The factors which motivate veterinarians and clients certainly overlap in improving animal health, welfare, and longevity, but there are other motivators for the professional which may be at odds with the client's hopes and expectations.
