1. When similar things appear to be grouped together such as size, shape and or orientation what is this called?
a. This is called principle of similarity, for example notes that have similar pitches and that follow each other closely in time they can become perceptually grouped to form a melody.

2. What are Properties of Figure and Ground and who was it introduced by?
a. Properties of Figure and Ground is when the figure is in front of the ground for example in your office you have your desk and on your desk you have it full with paper and items. Your desk would be your Ground and the papers and items would be your Figure. Figure and Ground was introduced by Danish Psychologist Edgar Rubin.

3. Regardless of the size and the difficulty a picture or scene may be after looking at it, a person can know what it is in a fraction of a second, what is that called?
a. Gist of a scene

4. If you are watching a TV show, why is it that you pay attention to the main characters on the screen instead of what is happening in the background?
a. The answer to this question is our attention towards something or someone and how we perceive it. If you are watching one of your favorite TV shows, you are more inclined to watch the main characters and what they are doing instead of what the extras are doing in the background. They are probably not going to be speaking or doing anything that would pertain to that episode and what is going on in the episode.

5. If you are at a party and asked to scan the room looking for a specific person, what is this called?
a. It’s called saccadic eye movement. This is when your eyes quickly move from one object to another. In this case it’s an actual person you are looking for.
