For some people, experiencing art is a form of entertainment, for others it can become lassitude and may think of art primarily as a worthless investment , or something to be consumed. But for some people, visual art can be a life changing experience. Our brain perceives everything we see, whether we are in control of it or not. The way we perceive what we see is personal and different within everyone. Artists have the ability to change the way someone comprehends their work and the way one goes about their life. This ability can be used in a positive and negative way, either way it’s used, it changes the way you think but most importantly will change your life.
The eye and brain work in a partnership to interpret the outside world. Ultimately, we see whatever our brains think we should. Sixty percent of the brain is dedicated to storing and retrieving visual data. Ten percent of our visual perception comes from what we are actually seeing, the other ninety percent is stored data that our brains piece together to comprehend what we see. Our brains are stimulated by what is challenging and new, so when we see a new image, our brain is recognizing visual data and storing new data to our visual database. This helps us comprehend what the image is. Doing this will add more information and understanding to the brains database. “The more you see, the more you know, the more you know, the smarter you be.” said Dr.Seuss. The mental process of understanding can and will lead to a smarter individual.
Each side of the brain controls different types of thinking. Additionally, people are said to prefer one type of thinking over the other. The right side of the brain is best at expressive and creative tasks such as imagination.
