Wal-Mart: The high cost of low prices
The idea behind the movie is to present to the public what they do not know about one of the world’s largest companies. In the year 2005, Wal-Mart grossed about 270 billion dollars making it the number one company in the world for that year. What the general public does not know are what the company had to do in order to achieve that goal. When Wal-Mart opens a new location in a small town anywhere in the United States, I tend to run every business in its vicinity into the ground by implementing cheaper prices even if there is less human interaction and customer service. Wal-Mart steals away about 3 Billion dollars a year from small, ma and pa stores. Most employees who works at Wal-Mart earn about $5k under the Federal Poverty Salary which currently stands at about $18k p/y. This cause employees to apply for government aid such as Welfare and Medicaid, federal aid is highly recommended by Wal-Mart to its employees; by doing this, the government gives up about $1.5 Billion dollars a year from tax payers because Wal-Mart does not want to use their own money for the benefit of its employees. Lee Scott, Wal-Marts President and C.E.O, states that all employees are treated fairly and just, with emphasis on the fact that there is no problem with the benefits or wages of Wal-Mart employees. When rumors start to stir around one of Wal-Marts stores, the manager alerts the corporate office in Arkansas, which in turn sends down a jet with 3 executives in order to kill the idea of a union due to that fact that Wal-Mart would lose more money in paying their employees higher wages and better benefits. Wal-Mart does not only make their earnings with the hard work of the store associates, it makes it on the hands of the people that work in their factories in third world countries such as Honduras, Bangladesh and China. In these countries, Wal-Mart tends to target young girls between the ages of 12 and 16 which only receive the sum of $.13...
