CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
The University of Port Harcourt is a university in the Nigerian city of Port Harcourt. It was established in 1975 as University College, Port Harcourt, and was given university status in 1977. The university originally had six schools in 1977 namely School of Humanities, School of Social Sciences, School of Biological Sciences, School of Chemical Sciences, School of Physical Sciences and School of Educational Studies. It changed from a school system to a faculty system in 1982. The university now has ten faculties: Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Management Sciences, College of Health Sciences, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Agriculture. The University of Port Harcourt over the years has grown to become one of the best educational institutions in Nigeria.
Intercontinental hostel is a hostel in University of Port Harcourt. It was built by the former intercontinental bank to house students as the pursue their educational commitments. It is located beside UBA hostel, opposite the swimming pool in Abuja campus, Choba.
1.1 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Refuse collected from the University of Port Harcourt is usually dumped in a small forest in front of the intercontinental hostel. The dumped refuse is subsequently burnt which releases fumes that move into the hostel. This research paper investigates if the fumes released by the refuse burning affects the convenience of students residing in the hostel.
