Wealth + Poverty

Money can be good or bad depending on how you use it. Jesus says that it is good if you share your money. The catechism says that if you refuse or withhold your wage it can be a grave injustice. Biblical teachings show that if people have the wrong attitude towards money it can lead them away from God. The bible also says that if you have great wealth you should give some to those living in poverty.

Catholics see money as a gift from God and they believe that it should be spent in the ways that God wished it to be spent. Helping and sharing it with others. This could involve giving money to charities such as Cafod who then use the money to do things for those in poverty, such as building wells, introducing fresh water and wiring up electricity.

‘Go sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven’. This was a quote taken from Mark chapter 10. It is Jesus speaking to a wealthy man. The man was sad because he loved his money. This quote shows how Jesus felt about wealth. He believes that if you have great wealth then you should help poverty by giving it to those who are in poverty. However he taught that there was nothing wrong with being wealthy. He said that it was only when this wealth got in the way of someone’s relationship with God that it became a problem. ‘People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil’. This is a quote taken from 1 Timothy 6:9-10. It is saying that if you fall in love with your wealth, it will turn you evil.
